Are we supposed to take "until death do us part" literally? Probably not, right? Apparently, in rural China, love after death is a big deal, since the village of Dongbao reported at least 36 cases of serious theft in order to marry a deceased wife of the Bachelor corpse of someone an other.
These "ghost marriages" were quite common in China until 1949, which is when the People's Republic banned them. But it seems that the custom came back strong in Dongbao. And why do people do this? It is to stop an ancient Chinese curse.
Throughout Dongbao, gravesites are beginning to look like this. This is because diggers have become matchmakers.

In Chinese tradition, it is bad luck for a man to die single. It can even bring a curse on his family.

Therefore, families rely on "until death do us part" to actually say that death cancels the wedding. They pay a very heavy price gravediggers to dig up the dead wives so they could marry their dead, single parents.

I have not seen pictures of these ghostly ceremonies (as they are still illegal in China), but hope they do not force two members of poor families to corpses kiss. Yikes.
