During the First World War, the greatly improved medical technology, but unfortunately, so did the weapons. Men returning from war were much disfigured due to technological progress as the machine gun. As a result, artists like Anna Coleman Ladd were in high demand for the reconstruction of their faces.

In these images in black and white, Ladd, with the British sculptor Francis Derwent Wood build and masks shaped metal oN oF soldiers who lost part of their face war.

This may simply be due to the nature of black and white images, but the masks seem very good, at least to the 100s prostheses. The work of Ladd and Wood shows an interesting intersection between artistic flair and medical science that is still visible today.
