Regarding German traditions, most of us are familiar with the most popular as Oktoberfest. However, one of the ancient strangest German traditions that you can still see evidence of the faces of elderly Germans for decades thereafter was Mensur.

Mensur was a much less rigorous activity than traditional fencing. He also participates less protective gear. Companies of students gathered, drink, and a duel between them. This generally resulted in more than a few scars on the face and neck. However, the scars are generally regarded as marks of distinction.
He was considered favorable to have facial scars of battle as they solidified their standing with their peers.
