Despite hundreds of years of research on how the Earth works, it still manages to Us surprise quite often. Sometimes these surprises are interesting and beneficial to life, other times, however, they catch us off guard with devastating consequences.
What happened recently in the Mexican state of Veracruz falls into the latter category.
For hundreds of years, the Atoyac river has been an essential part of life for residents of Veracruz. But earlier this month, the entire water body literally disappeared overnight.

It looks like something from a science fiction novel, but here are before and after pictures of the river.

The culprit? A large hole in the riverbed. On Sunday evening, residents said they heard a loud cracking sound. In the morning, they found the river and disappeared quickly reconstructed what happened.

Government investigators put the blame on geology. Historically, the area near the river has been known for its unstable geological structure. They say the limestone rock moved to cause the crack. Why is moved is still under study.

with the river disappeared, fish people used to depend disappeared too. Now they report that other animals are fleeing the area as well. To date, there is no viable plan to bring the Atoyac River.
