Since the 1970s, there was a surprisingly high number of flaring cults and go then in a fire of (relative) fame in the United States. While there are a number of cults with backstories shocking that we could discuss today we'll focus on the group called Heaven's Gate, based in Southern California.

The cult believed that the Earth was intended to be "recycled". Recycled in this case meaning cleaned, renewed, refurbished and rejuvenated. The only way to survive was to leave Earth immediately. While they have not formally endorsed suicide, they chose instead to redefine the term. Door to members of the suicide of heaven was "to turn against the next level when it is offered."

on 19 March, Applewhite himself filmed talk of a mass suicide, saying it was the only way to leave the Earth in time. He convinced his followers that a UFO was leaking near the comet Hale & ndash; Bopp. The ship, he said, would be able to take their souls and deliver them to a higher plane of existence if all suicide with him immediately.

So that's exactly what they did.

Each of the 39 members have taken a lethal dose of poison mixed with apple sauce and sprinkled with vodka. Before going to bed for the last time, each member had a plastic bag secured around their heads to ensure asphyxiation if the poison failed. When police arrived on the scene about 10 days later, they found 39 all dressed in identical clothes lying peacefully in their own bunk beds.

Fifteen members died March 24, 15 others on 25 March, and nine on March 26. After each wave the remaining members clean and raise the body. Applewhite was the third to last to die. Two female members killed themselves after his death. They were the only bodies found without bags over their heads.

Curiously, the gate of heaven always work in some capacity. It is site is still updated and emails are still responded. They even have an entire channel on Vimeo where all videos of the group have been downloaded. Here is the link if you want to be weirded out enough.
