While medical science has come so far, we are still far from eradicating all diseases that could befall an innocent victim. Again, the diseases are not really all that terrifying ... that is, if you are comparing the possible impact and severity of contracting a parasite.
Just to stir your fears a little, here is a list of the six most common parasites (and horrible) that can still infect you and ruin your life in 2016.
1. Ascaris
Wiki Commons
These horrible little buggers can make the jump to humans by mosquito bite. Once they are in your system, they can live up to eight years and wreak havoc on your lymphatic system. The result is usually a severe disfigurement involving members of the swelling as the image above.
2. The Guinea worm
Wikipedia
can contract a Guinea worm by water containing water fleas. These leaks usually carry Guinea worm larvae. People infected with Guinea worm will show no symptoms for a while until a blister in the skin near the base. Soon, the worm will try to get out of this blister to start the life cycle again. Fortunately, the infection rate Guinea worm are at historically low levels thanks to improved drinking water filtration.
3. Hookworm
Wikipedia
This horrible creatures like to suck your blood while making a home for themselves inside your intestines. In some cases, they have been known to draw sufficient blood from their host to cause severe anemia. You can contract hookworms by walking barefoot on soil contaminated with feces. So remember, wear shoes outside
4. liver fluke
Wikipedia
the method of choice for input liver fluke is contaminated water. Once in your system, they find their way to your liver where they make a home for themselves near your bile ducts. Delicious. Infected people can expect to enjoy infections pain and severe liver. Oh, and these buggers can live up to 30 years, so it is not an infection that is faster.
Acanthamoeba keratitis 5.
Wikipedia
Acanthamoeba keratitis is why you should change your lenses regularly. There is a small amoeba which penetrates through the eye and the cornea attack thereafter. If this occurs, the best scenario is corneal scarring, but blindness is more common. This infection is common for contact lens wearers who leave their lenses too long.
6. botfly
Wikipedia
Botflies are the absolute worst species of parasite that you can get. Thank you for your lucky stars I saved you some of the most graphic images that comes with a botfly infection. Essentially, they attach their eggs to mosquitoes. When the mosquito bites a human, the eggs hatch and tiny larvae make their way into your skin. Then, of course, they dig and grow there. Removing those things is relatively simple, but it hurts like hell that.
(via whatever is interesting)
NOPE! Ugh, so Nope. The world could be less terrifying in 2016 than it was in 1716, but the fact that we can easily take out these parasites gives me anxiety.
