In 05, Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans, damaging thousands thousands of homes and forcing millions to leave everything behind. As the waters subsided and people returned to their ravaged homes, they became aware of a problem rather unpleasant.
Although some people have their food with them when they evacuated, many do not.

Those who had to leave their refrigerators behind finally discovered what happens when you leaving behind large refrigerator in 0 degree weather.
And it was not only extremely disgusting. Spoiled food actually become toxic.

The mud in refrigerators was able to corrode metal and plastic, and unfortunate that opened their refrigerators said the putrid smell remained for days. Most people just close sealed with tape and thrown on the sidewalk. A few brave souls tried to clean them, but they have not had much success.
Accordingly, the dead refrigerators began to appear throughout the city.

because of the damage inside, hazardous materials teams had to address the problem. Because there were so many of these rank devices sitting around, cleanup took months.
People started to be creative when they realized that their refrigerators would be hanging around for a little longer.

zombification made them perfect for Halloween, for example. In 05, the "Katrina refrigerator" was a popular choice of costume.

But eventually they were all collected and disposed at the Gentilly landfill.

There were about 150,000 in total.
This is not the ideal way to dispose of refrigerators, but they are not many options.

In 06, the last of refrigerators were collected and evaluated. The recovery process was far from complete at that time, but removing these zombie refrigerators was a sign of progress.
