Sleep disorders are fickle beasts. There are few things more frustrating than watching the ceiling for hours with no choice but to watch the clock tick down into oblivion. As if trapped in a living nightmare, those who suffer from sleep problems know they will be facing the same problems every single night & mdash; and paired with this painful reality is the constant stress that comes with realizing that no one will ever understand how you feel.
They will never understand what it's like to dread bedtime, or how painful it is to go about daily life when you are running on fumes. That's why the work of these artists is so important. Through animation and illustration, Petra and Maja Svajger Poljanc explore the psychology of disturbed sleep in a eye-opening series called parasomnias s .
extending beyond insomnia, both artists aim to present disorders that are incomprehensible to those outside in a more visceral.

Thinking about the nature of sleep conceptually is a pretty daunting (and often unsuccessful) business. That's why they decided to create visual alternatives to these abstract ideas. In the image above & mdash; aptly titled REM Sleep & mdash; we face with eyes dance and vulnerable body associated with a form of sleep that people with chronic conditions never experience
Everyone can identify with the feeling of stuffing an alert mind in a sleeping body, but we can all tap into the frozen terror we if all had the experience of these monsters under the bed came out of hiding.

Eat sleep illustrates one of the most bizarre disorders bouquet. After all, you can not brush your teeth after meals you do not remember eating.
The animations attach sensations familiar to otherwise unfathomable conditions.

According to this piece called Restless Leg Syndrome , the disorder is similar to feel goose bumps on your legs in constant motion. It really highlights the fact that people with RLS involve little or no relaxation with the idea of going to bed each night.
With simple illustrations, and Svajger Poljanc interpret sleep disorders in a way that is both literal clearly and completely inspired.

in a flash, Insomnia illustrates the emptying sensation that comes with the lie awake night after night in an endless cycle.
one of the many functions of art is to reinterpret the phenomena of which we feel disconnected in everyday life, and that's exactly what parasomnias did. It is difficult to imagine the toll that sleep disorders are sick if these conditions are not part of your reality. By attaching familiar images to concepts which might as well be floating in the ether somewhere, it tethers each disorder fairly close to the ground to transform it into something recognizable.
