The city of Triora, Italy, is as beautiful as a painting. Tourists flock there from all over the world every year to admire the medieval architecture of the beautiful area and picturesque hills.
Hidden within this town of fairy tale, however, is a history of violence and paranoia which makes the trials of Salem witch seem like a breeze.
In 1587, in particular bad weather led to poor harvest and the subsequent massive famine. Instead of blaming the climate, however, the townspeople decided to blame the presence of witches.

The local government called the Inquisitor of Genoa and Albenga with Priest Girolamo del Pozzo, to substantiate the allegations of witchcraft in the city ... and that is exactly what they did.

a few days after their arrival, at least 20 women were gathered, tortured and forced to confess their satanic crimes. By the time the first interrogations were over, at least 10 other women have been added to the list doomed.

Several of the accused were from noble families of the region, and despite the serious repression of their parents, the kidnappers would not release them.

When all was said and done, at least four of the accused parties were burned at the stake. It is possible that the number was actually much higher. Unfortunately, there are few records of the time survivors.

But violence n has not ceased to Triora. In recent years, the witch hunt continued in small towns outside the city. Things got so bad, in fact, that the Vatican had to intervene and stop the madness. This is when all the other prisoners were released.

Despite such a morbid history, people of Triora seem strangely proud of the past of their town.

In its ancient walls you can find museums dedicated to hunting weird witches. They even hold several witchcraft festivals here throughout the year.

the power of unfounded paranoia is strong. It is events like these on which I think we should all think about on a regular basis. After all, you know what they say about history repeating itself. Do not let that happen.
