Do not believe everything you hear.

The video below is an illusion known as the audience "Shepard tone." Roger Shepard was a cognitive scientist who is said to be the "father of research on spatial relations", and this trick is named after him, because essentially what happens is a series of sinus separated by an octave. That seems really complicated, but I promise, it really is not. Just give this video game and then play again and see what happens.

Have you noticed that when you play a second time, it looked like the scale got more?

it could have sounded like this ... but nope! the sequence has not changed, just your perception. This occurs because the same note played by two octaves, but the higher starting score goes down, it gets quieter and end of the clip, it is virtually inaudible. Meanwhile, the lower octave notes gradually louder as it rises and becomes note the strongest you mean by the end of the clip. When these two sounds are combined in the order and playing again, it gives the illusion that it is constantly growing. Bla, bla, it is basically the equivalent of an audio barbershop pole.

If you like this, check out some of these guided audio illusions AsapScience. Totally worth it if you have headphones and a little time on your hands.

What good listener you are! Give it a share on Facebook and let people hear what happens!
