The Dervaes family lives on a plot of 1.1 acres of land in about 15 minutes outside of downtown Los Angeles. It's a pretty standard house for the region, but it is certainly not what you imagine when picturing a farm that is capable of producing half a ton of food each year.
But that's exactly what they do here.
Although their property measures less than 4,500 square feet, the Dervaes family manages to generate a serious amount of food.

Six thousand pounds of food per year, to be exact.
"This is the city life, but I led the country to the city," said 63-year-old Jules Dervaes, who started his farm miniature 10 ago years.

urban farming has grown in popularity in recent years because it allows people in urban and suburban environments to transform their yards, roofs and other outdoor spaces in gardens of eating more and more.
Farms do not have to sit on the sprawling fields. These small gardens for personal use question the idea that food must be shipped in the cities industrial facilities.
Not only the family grow fruits and vegetables, but they also keep eight chickens, four ducks, two goats and a colony of bees.

What they do not eat, the family sells from their porch. Talk about the local supply! Their organic food is very popular in the area, both with individual customers and local restaurants. The Dervaes family earns about $ 20,000 per year from the sale of food products only.
