Between 1999 and 02, after the Yugoslav wars, photographer George Georgiou has been living and working in Kosovo and Serbia, mainly photographed following the conflict with NATO Serbia. While there, he visited three psychiatric institutions, by taking these haunting photographs of patients and their shocking living conditions. George had spent four years teaching a photography class for people with psychiatric disorders in London before, so that psychiatric facilities and patients were not foreign to him. What he found in Kosovo and Serbia was far from being contemporary practice in London.

George Georgiou had this to say about his experience there:

the first time I visited the institutions they have been hidden from the eyes of the public and came as a shock to the Serbs when they were exposed. The money, in the years of the Milosevic regime had drained, leaving unsanitary conditions, contagious diseases, lack of medical care and rehabilitation and the inability to monitor due to low paid staff unmotivated struggling with their own economic difficulties. The worst thing was the complete lack of care and stimulation and the high number of people who should never have been in these places. People with physical disabilities, (the boy without legs was the victim of a car accident and orphans), Down's Syndrome, a high proportion of Roma or children whose misfortune was to be born in the institutions. By living in this deprived environment, with little stimulation or compassion, they begin to show a repetitive rocking behavior and self-harm. In 02, on my last visits, the money had been raised in a public awareness campaign in Serbia with the help of a number of NGOs conditions had improved. For me, after the initial shock of the conditions and the total lack of care, it became clear that patients of all ethnic backgrounds were able to view more community, affection and care with each other that the sad situation that their "healthy" compatriots were displaying to each other outside
