While they are a necessity in most modern cities and towns, utility boxes tend to look quite ... well ... utility. But no longer the case in Auckland, New Zealand, thanks to the work of Paul Walsh.

According to the artist, it all started in 2013 he painted a grumpy cat image on the wall of his local park for dogs, and it quickly became popular with visitors. City officials were to have, however, so they painted on it.

Without the boxes, there would not memes. According to Walsh, "images of 'AstroSloth' and 'Seal Awkward' had probably been passed down through the boxes before I painted on the outside."

The painted boxes were a great success, with both residents and people following the project Aukland online. Walsh said he intended to continue painting in Auckland, but his ultimate goal is to start creating public art in other cities around the world.
