They became famous on Family Guy as " waving inflatable arm wacky -flailing tube men. "My mother refers to them as" happy flappy whiplash men. "Their official name, and it is for the debate of whether or not they have one, is largely unknown (although the general consensus seems to be that are men). But you know what I mean.
you've probably seen in many cars, or other places trying to attract your attention. They are great with tubular figures a pair of arms and a silly face, powered by a fan blowing air up in their bodies so they can fight and flail in the wind, looking like a noodle in colored neon. You might think they are funny, or you might think they are tacky. Houston thought they were so sticky that the city has banned them, referring to them as "visual clutter and blight." Whatever you think of these people exuberant tube, you have probably wondered: Who thought this weird thing?
O HAI
In fact, they gave a surprisingly cultured background. It all starts with a man named Peter Minshall, Trinidad and Tobago. Minshall was known in his home and in places abroad for his work as man mas . This term is used in Trinidad for someone who creates works for carnivals. Minshall was known for creating huge puppets who dance to the music of carnival. In 1995 he was hired to create for the opening ceremonies of the Atlanta Olympics in 1996. After some trial and error, he came up with a figure of inflatable tube which, when connected to an air supply source down, would dance. Minshall named the 'big boys'. With the help of the Israeli artist based in L.A. named Doron Gazit, the big boys have become a reality, and debuted at the Olympics.
"big boys" Minshall dance at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta. Unlike their descendants, these tube men have two feet instead of a single rod.
original design Minshall for the big boys
After the Olympics, Gazit eventually patent the big boys, whom he called "flyguys." This caused some tension between the designer and manufacturer. But other people have already been duplicated design, and suddenly the big boys / flyguys were popping up everywhere, doing their silly dance. The company Gazit licensed the patent to a number of businesses and thus increase the undulating tube human population was born. A company called "Air Dancers."
In addition to catch your eye in the hope of selling you a Ford, tubes guys have also been found to have a surprisingly practical use: they are really good scarecrows. While perhaps not as picturesque as the variety of classic stuffed straw, they proved to be extremely effective for protecting crops against birds.
The "Air Rangers," as they are called, are modern take scarecrows, and are really effective. To differentiate happier "Air Dancers", these come with a more threatening (for birds, anyway) face and reflective tape on the ends.
So anything that you could think of them, take a moment to appreciate the history of the big boy, the flyguy, dancer Air, Air Ranger, or whatever name you come up with for them. And if nothing else, you might be able to make a great costume for next Halloween:
