Think Being pregnant is bad now? ... Here's How It used to be terrible -
I am not, and will never be a pregnant woman. And while I think there is some truth in the idea that men can suffer from envy uterus at the same time, I am very happy that I will never have to go through the things that pregnant women make for a little less than a year.
But things could be much worse for pregnant women ... and they were for a very long time. Take a journey through pregnancy medically dubious myths and often overtly sexist past, shall we?
1. The test of wheat and barley pee.
Wikimedia Commons
A document of ancient Egypt said women in 1350 BCE would detect pregnancy by peeing on seeds of wheat and barley. If the barley grows, it's a boy! If the wheat grows, it's a girl! While this may sound strange, the MORE BIZARRE part about this is that in the 1960s, they recreated this archaic test. The researchers found that the urine of pregnant women actually DO promoting growth, while the urine of men and non-pregnant women not working.
2. The flight of youth.
Wikipedia
According to an old myth, if a woman is pregnant with a girl, the child will undermine his youth and beauty, but if the woman is pregnant with a boy, she appears radiant and healthy. We now know that this is, of course, stupid. Girl or boy, changing hormones in the body of a woman in the first trimester can cause her out. The daughter of a mother is not trying to pull a reverse-
Hocus Pocus in utero.
3. Nobles have never been pregnant ... until the child arrived.
Wikipedia

The idea was that they were admired for their beauty by men doting peasants, and a baby would really burn. pregnant noblewoman portraits were painted, however, to prove the fertility of the family.

In Victorian times, it was believed that thoughts of pregnant women were somehow transferred to their babies, as if that's how the brain works. It was pretty much just an excuse to say pregnant women to stop complaining.
8. Corsets are TOTALLY good for babies.

Corset manufacturers in the Victorian era somehow convinced the mother to be that wearing a tight corset around their belly was good for them, as he held the baby up. They may be right, but it has also hampered food and oxygen from the contribution of the child.
9. You can make your baby a pervert.
Wikipedia
According to many men in the 20th century, if a man had sex with a pregnant woman, child would then grow up to be a pervert.
10. Each pregnancy cost the lives of at least one rabbit.
Wikipeda / Larry D. Moore
If you thought that the barley and wheat pregnancy test was weird, wait until you hear what we were doing in the early 20th century! The scientists were so excited to find hCG pregnancy hormone, they decided to use it in the most bizarre way. Wetting of the mother would be injected into young rabbits and mice. After five days, the rodents were killed and the ovaries were examined. An expanded body meant the mother was pregnant! So it was basically voodoo, people.
So relatively, things are much better for pregnant women now, but let's be honest, it is still not the best.
